Former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has been stripped of the International Emmy he received for his response to the COVID-19 pandemic following his resignation over an investigation into sexual harassment allegations against him.

“In light of the New York Attorney General’s report, and Andrew Cuomo’s subsequent resignation as Governor, it is rescinding his special 2020 International Emmy Award,” The International Academy of Television Arts and Sciences announced Tuesday, Variety reported.

“His name and any reference to his receiving the award will be eliminated from International Academy materials going forward,” the statement said.

Cuomo had been honored with the Emmy last year for his “effective communication and leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic,” the group shared after selecting the then-governor for the International Emmy Founders Award.

“The Governor’s 111 daily briefings worked so well because he effectively created television shows, with characters, plot lines, and stories of success and failure,” Bruce L. Paisner, International Academy president and CEO, shared at the time. “People around the world tuned in to find out what was going on, and New York tough became a symbol of the determination to fight back.”

Cuomo announced in early August that he was resigning from office, but did not admit to any wrongdoing. New York Attorney General Letitia James previously announced findings of an investigation that concluded Cuomo had “sexually harassed a number of State employees through unwelcome and unwanted touching, as well as by making numerous offensive and sexually suggestive comments.”

“I’ve never crossed the line with anyone,” the governor stated in a press conference. “But, I didn’t realize the extent to which the line has been redrawn. There are generational and cultural shifts that I just didn’t fully appreciate.”
