{"id":31348,"date":"2021-05-20T16:15:22","date_gmt":"2021-05-20T23:15:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cww7news.com\/?p=31348"},"modified":"2021-05-20T16:15:23","modified_gmt":"2021-05-20T23:15:23","slug":"israeli-security-cabinet-approves-unilateral-ceasefire-in-war-against-hamas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cww7news.com\/israeli-security-cabinet-approves-unilateral-ceasefire-in-war-against-hamas\/","title":{"rendered":"Israeli Security Cabinet Approves Unilateral Ceasefire in War Against Hamas"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap\">Israeli media reported Thursday that Israel\u2019s security cabinet had unanimously approved a ceasefire to end the military counteroffensive against terrorists in the Gaza Strip, effective at 2:00 a.m. Friday, local time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Associated Press&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/gaza-israel-middle-east-israel-palestinian-conflict-caac81bc36fe9be67ac2f7c27000c74b\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reported<\/a>&nbsp;\u201cno immediate reaction from Hamas.\u201d The cease is unilateral, meaning that there was no agreement with Hamas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The war began when Hamas launched a massive barrage of rockets against Israeli civilian targets, including Israel\u2019s major cities, using riots in Jerusalem \u2014 also started by Palestinian \u2014 as a pretext.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The eleven-day&nbsp;counteroffensive was stopped short \u201cafter heavy U.S. pressure to halt the offensive,\u201d but also after Israel managed to silence Palestinian rocket fire for eight hours from Wednesday night into Thursday morning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Indeed,&nbsp;Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) and Rep. Rashida Tlaib\u2019s (D-MI)&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/middle-east\/2021\/05\/19\/tted-cruz-objects-to-aoc-tlaibs-attempt-to-block-arms-deal-with-israel\/\">issued<\/a>&nbsp;a resolution to block a previously agreed-upon $735 million sale of U.S. precision-guided bombs to Israel Wednesday after tweeting multiple times their position against Israel\u2019s counteroffensive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Biden administration took the \u201cSquad\u2019s\u201d cue and issued a statement Wednesday stating that the White House expected Israel to stop its military operations. But Israel insisted on its right to defend itself, and did so again on Wednesday by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/middle-east\/2021\/05\/19\/israel-defense-forces-bombard-southern-lebanon-while-joe-biden-asks-for-ceasefire\/\">responding<\/a>&nbsp;to rocket fire on their northern border with Lebanon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Israeli defensive operations have primarily targeted Hamas\u2019 leadership and infrastructure, \u201cincluding a vast tunnel network,\u201d the AP notes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In total, 230 Palestinians have been killed, \u201caccording to the Gaza Health Ministry, which does not break the numbers down into fighters and civilians.
