{"id":38395,"date":"2023-08-14T09:47:56","date_gmt":"2023-08-14T16:47:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cww7news.com\/?p=38395"},"modified":"2023-08-14T09:47:57","modified_gmt":"2023-08-14T16:47:57","slug":"raf-typhoons-scramble-to-intercept-two-russian-bear-bombers-after-they-threatened-uk-airspace","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cww7news.com\/raf-typhoons-scramble-to-intercept-two-russian-bear-bombers-after-they-threatened-uk-airspace\/","title":{"rendered":"RAF Typhoons scramble to intercept two Russian \u2018Bear\u2019 bombers after they threatened UK airspace"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap\">RAF TYPHOONS intercepted two Russian &#8220;Bear&#8221; bombers after they threatened UK airspace in a brazen swoop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The two jets scrambled from RAF Lossiemouth to chase down the Cold War-era planes sent by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.the-sun.com\/who\/vladimir-putin\/\">Vladimir Putin<\/a>&#8216;s forces. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The two fighter jets were supported by an RAF Voyager air-to-air refuelling tanker flying alongside them on the mission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It cames after the Royal Navy is also understood to have monitored the movements of a Russian corvette, RFS Merkuriy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Putin&#8217;s warship is believed to have passed through the English Channel over the weekend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The two incidents came amid ongoing tensions between the UK and Russia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dutch and Danish F-16s were also scrambled to track the two Bear bombers today as part of a joint Nato mission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Russian planes and warships are often spotted near the UK as they carry out missions around the North Sea and the Arctic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>British forces however are always on alert to monitor and intercept should Putin&#8217;s men stray too close.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.the-sun.com\/news\/8575655\/plane-intercepted-raf-typhoons-nato-drills-russian-incursions\/\">Typhoons are supersonic jets<\/a>\u00a0that can hit speeds of up to 1,320mph &#8211; with some 130 of the planes in service with the UK. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the Typhoon pilots who shadowed the Bears, who was not named, said &#8220;adrenaline kicked in&#8221; when the scramble alarm was sounded &#8220;in the early hours of the morning&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They added:&nbsp;\u201cIt\u2019s really satisfying to know we\u2019ve been able to make a successful intercept, maintaining the integrity of UK and Nato airspace.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The jets refuelled from the Voyager tanker to extend their time in the sky and keep close tabs on the Bear, an ageing type of four-engined aircraft from the era of the Soviet Union which has been converted from a bomber to reconnaissance role.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The pilot added: &#8220;Working in tandem with ground control operators, and with air-to-air refuelling from an RAF Voyager, we were able to stay on task until the mission was complete, and the target aircraft departed the UK\u2019s area of interest.\u201d\u202f<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Ministry of Defence (MoD) said the Russian planes involved in the latest incident were maritime patrol aircraft used for reconnaissance and anti-submarine warfare.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>RAF TYPHOONS intercepted two Russian &#8220;Bear&#8221; bombers after they threatened UK airspace in a brazen swoop.
